Banda Aceh

Banda Aceh is a processing facility and farm dedicated to improving quality, experimenting annually with 8-10 different processing methods to determine which best suit the region's coffee. They pay a premium price for coffee cherries bought from surrounding farmers based on ripeness.

I chose this lot to introduce to Japanese roasters because it produces flavors that are sure to impress. Every year, Banda Aceh makes capital investments to improve quality and experiment with new processing methods. Their dedication reminds me of Japan's revered artisans. Please look forward to enjoying this coffee, which is like a work of art crafted by a talented family.

Indonesian Coffee's Hidden Potential

High-quality Indonesian coffee, known as "Mandheling" during Japan's coffee shop boom in the 1970s, continues to be cherished for its unique aroma and flavor. However, "Mandheling" refers specifically to coffee harvested in certain regions of Sumatra Island. In reality, coffee is cultivated across Indonesia’s diverse islands, which stretch approximately 1,900 km north to south and 5,100 km east to west, with a harvest season occurring somewhere throughout the year. Since the commencement of the Cup of Excellence (COE) in 2021, numerous lots from regions beyond the traditional "Mandheling" area have received awards, highlighting the vast, yet unrecognized potential of Indonesia as a coffee-producing country.
